Parenting Corner – My newborn is always hungry
Q: I’m not producing enough breast milk to keep my newborn son satisfied. I understand and believe in the importance of breastfeeding but I’m frustrated and he’s always crying, what should I do?
A: Great question! You are not alone, this is a challenge many new moms face. What is the result you want? If breastfeeding is most important there are lots of great resources available, consider La Leche League, calling your pediatrician or even asking friends. NOTE: Everyone will have an opinion on this subject and yet your opinion is most important. Some women can’t or don’t want to breastfeed and that’s ok too. Although there are benefits to breastfeeding there is no pressure to do it except the one you place on yourself. There are children and adults around the world thriving physically and emotionally who were minimally or never breastfeed. Whatever you decide needs to work for you and your baby. The decision doesn’t have to be one or the other, there are many moms who find a happy combination. There are moms who mix breast milk and formula. There are moms who switch between breast milk and formula each feeding. There are moms who enhance/thicken their breast milk with baby cereal during one or more feedings. There are lots of options available when you are willing to consider them. Regardless of what you decide there is no right or wrong. A happy and content mom will encourage a happy and content baby.
