Parenting Corner – Social media and my kids
Q: I don’t like to post photos of my children on social media but I feel pressured by family and friends to share because everyone else does. I’m considering it but I’m still on the fence, do you have any advice?
A: Great question! Like lemmings jumping to a mass suicide death, the natural desire to follow the crowd is sometimes unexplainable and yet innate. Some may see the analogy as extreme and yet when you consider the potential consequences of social media, it’s not far off. The decision to post photos of your children is an important one that MUST be your own, not because you were pressured by family and friends.
Carefully weigh your options by listing the benefits and consequences of posting photos of your children on social media. Asking yourself open-ended questions is another way to help bring clarity. Some questions to consider include: What is the result I want from posting pictures? What other ways can I share photos of my children with family and friends? What would make me comfortable posting photos of my kids on social media? A deeper understanding of your position will help you be confident in your decision regardless of what you decide.
